Tourism Professor and Grad Student Collaborate
Charis Tucker, a 2015 M.S. in Sustainable Tourism graduate, and her advisor, Dr. Cynthia Deale, a professor in the College of Business’ School of Hospitality Leadership, recently published an article in the Journal of Tourism and Cultural Change. Titled, “Embedded and exposed: exploring the lived experiences of African-American tourists,” the article is based on Tucker’s graduate thesis that she completed under Dr. Deale’s guidance. During her graduate experience at the School, Tucker also worked as a graduate assistant in the global understanding section of the Dimensions of Tourism class that Dr. Deale teaches.
Tucker, currently employed as the assistant director of International Programs at the Mary Baldwin University Spencer Center for Civic and Global Engagement, creates and implements creative educational workshops, events, and programs to broaden student awareness and knowledge of global cultures and issues. She oversees all aspects of the study abroad program including advisement, collaboration with campus and community members, and coordination of scholarship and student preparation. Lastly, Tucker maintains international university partnerships and supports international students during their arrival, orientation and continued matriculation at the university.
