Intern Spotlight: Lawson Bowman

Tell us about yourself.
I am a senior finance major and will graduate in December. I was named to the Deans’ list the past three semesters and actively involved in both the Financial Management Association and the Investments Club here on campus.
How did you learn about this internship and where is it?
This past spring, I was informed about the internship via email from College of Business Career Center director, Lee Brown. My internship takes place in Mooresville, NC at the Lowe’s corporate headquarters.
How did the College of Business prepare you for this internship?
Aside from the analytics aspect of my internship, learning how to collaborate and function effectively within a team in business 2200 and 3200 was highly beneficial when I participated in quarterly report meetings. Although I am a finance major, being able to complete a Risk Management and Insurance course before beginning this opportunity was extremely helpful in terms of being familiar with the different strategies of risk assessment.
Have you enjoyed this internship? Has it been helpful?
I honestly cannot say enough good things about this company. Having the opportunity to gain an internship experience from a Fortune 40 company has been an exciting yet challenging opportunity. Both my mentor and manager have given me tremendous support throughout my intern project and been extremely valuable toward my professional development.
Tell us about your experience in the College of Business.
My experience in the College of Business has been sensational. Being able to learn from some of the most intriguing professors has definitely been a privilege. At times, there were some challenging moments when working on specific assignments, but these experiences definitely increased my critical thinking abilities and work ethic.
At what moment during your internship did you know that your work in the College of Business paid off?
While meeting with my manager for my internship mid-evaluation, I was informed that the department was pleased with the way I was conducting my project and collaborating with each of the employees during meetings. At that moment, I knew my College of Business experience had paid off.
What would you tell other students about completing an internship?
It is absolutely imperative that students place most of their focus on gaining an internship experience early in their college career. Aside from the resume boost, gaining corporate workplace experience is almost impossible to replicate in the classroom. Internships also are great for networking purposes. Your chances of receiving an impressive job offer after graduating are significantly higher if you perform well during an internship.
What is something most people probably do not know about you?
One thing people probably do not know about me is that I struggled from multiple learning disabilities such as dyslexia and attention deficit disorder (A.D.D) during the earlier stages of my educational development.
