Student Spotlight: Shydeik Wood

Shydeik Wood, a senior marketing major, discusses his internship with Speedway and how the College of Business helped to prepare him.

How did you learn about the internship?
I learned about the internship opportunity from talking with Speedway representatives during the ECU Career fair.

How did the College of Business prepare you for this successful internship?
I would say the College of Business prepared me for this internship by giving me the confidence and knowledge necessary to succeed. The College of Business was able to give me the experience of professionalism, critical thinking, and teamwork – all things I used during the internship.

Describe your experiences at Speedway.
During my time with Speedway, I gained a broader perspective on running a major company with hands-on experience. I had the opportunity to shadow and complete the tasks of several positions during my 11 weeks with the company. Some of the positions included general manager, district manager, HR advisor, marketing coordinator, regional manager, and others. I had the privilege of traveling to the corporate office in Ohio to present marketing strategies to the vice president of marketing along with other corporate employees. I also traveled to Florida to present to the division. Overall, my experience was extremely rewarding.

Describe your experience at the College of Business.
My experience at the College of Business has been great. I’ve had amazing professors who cared about my success both in and out of the classroom. I also am thankful for the leadership experience that I can implement in my professional career.

What was the moment during your internship where you knew that your ECU COB education has paid off?
I would say when I was able to reflect and use the tools I learned within the COB to apply during my internship, including when I gave an hour presentation with a team, with only 24 hours to prepare. I felt strongly confident.

Why would you recommend a business student take advantage of an internship opportunity?
Other than the obvious resume booster, having an internship gives a student necessary experience that is valuable post-graduation. Experience and exposure are more important than some may think. An internship also gives you the ability to understand concepts from experience rather than being told in the classroom. That early, hands-on experience is a tool that many do not have the privilege of receiving. So, having it is beneficial for any student. It also allows you to understand what you may or may not want to do for a career.

What would be the one thing that people would be surprised to learn about you?
I’m pretty big into theatre. Musicals more specifically. Another thing, I randomly think about having my own apartment complex one day; it’s something I plan to pursue.
