In turn with Claudia Lynn Camlin

In turn is a series dedicated to highlighting the interns and internship opportunities that can be found within the College of Business (COB).

Management Senior Claudia Lynn Camlin calls herself a social butterfly, and her experiences at the College of Business (COB) prove as much. She’s involved in the Kappa Delta sorority and Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity. As a COB Peer Mentor, she helps newcomers navigate the many opportunities found at the College.

Camlin, who’s expected to graduate in May 2021, also has participated in numerous internship opportunities while at the COB. She shared with us her recent internship experience, as well as her thoughts about the COB.

“I chose ECU and the College of Business because the university is approximately two hours from my hometown, Chesapeake, Virginia,” said Camlin.  “I wanted to branch out and not attend the same university as my high school friends. I have always been a social butterfly, and I was confident that I would thrive in a new place. I chose to go into business because that is the field that both my parents studied and seemed to enjoy. I felt that leading others was something I would like to do after I graduate, and I could use my social skills to do so.”

How did you learn about this internship opportunity with the Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia (CCEVA)?

My original internship was canceled due to COVID-19, but I was able to find an open internship position for the summer at CCEVA, where my mother is employed.

How did the COB prepare you to be the chosen candidate?

Having taken Human Resources Management this past spring, I became interested in the field and was very prepared within this field when interning for CCEVA.

Describe your experience at the COB.

The College of Business instilled confidence and drive within me that I believe will lead me to be successful when I graduate in May 2021. My professors and peers have been extremely supportive and have expanded my knowledge of the business world.

Why would you recommend a business student take advantage of an internship opportunity?

Taking advantage of internships in different management fields every summer of college has helped me better narrow down what areas interest me more. These experiences have shown me a more hands-on side of things than what you learn from a lecture/textbook.

What was the moment during your internship search process where you knew that your ECU COB education has paid off?

While I did not technically “search” for this internship, one of my projects showed me that my education is paying off. I was tasked with writing a COVID-19 Operations Manual for CCEVA, and for this assignment, I frequently referred to concepts that were discussed by Dr. Craig Williams while in my human resources management class.  I believe that this underlying knowledge of HR made me very prepared for any projects handed to me.
