Checking in from Wyoming

My name is Sarah Krec, and I am currently enrolled in ECU’s MBA program with a certificate in sustainable hospitality and tourism. Last spring, I started the program though I live in Jackson, Wyoming, which is more than 2000 miles away from ECU’s campus. ECU’s College of Business and its School of Hospitality Leadership has offered me the opportunity to continue my education while living in a semi-remote area.

I work in the hospitality industry, specifically in reservations and meetings/events, which inspired me to go back to school. The work I do every day directly contributes to the tourism industry, which Jackson’s economy is built on, and it allows me the opportunity to interact with visitors before they arrive.

I was specifically drawn to ECU and the program because of their sustainable hospitality and tourism certificate. Before working in hospitality, I worked closely with the National Park Service. In both roles, I have experienced the clashing priorities of visitors and residents. I have also seen the pressure put on local economies to prioritize visitors’ needs and wants, sometimes at the expense of year-round residents.

These observations have led me to my current research project, which focuses on Jackson’s sustainable tourism practices. This research specifically focuses on the community’s perspective of what needs to be done to ensure the industry is protected from an environmental, economic and socio-cultural standpoint.

My time at ECU has already opened so many doors, and I cannot wait to see where it takes me next!
