In turn with Shaun Gizdic

Shaun H Gizdic recently completed an internship with Live Oak Bank out of Wilmington, NC, which is also his hometown. The senior management major and Honors College student recently spoke to us about his internship experience.

How did the Cunanan Center for Professional Success help prepare you for your internship search?

The Cunanan Center helped me prepare for an internship search through their resume and practice interview resources, which were both essential in helping me land an internship.

What were your responsibilities during your internship?

My responsibilities were financial analysis, building financial reports and collaborating with the extensive business analyst team.

How did you apply what you learned in BUSI 1200, BUSI 2200, BUSI 3200 or BUSI 4200 to your internship?

Skills such as collaboration and business etiquette are some of many that the BUSI 1200-4200 classes have allowed me to practice and implement toward my internship.

What was the most challenging thing you experienced during your internship, and how did what you learned in the COB help you overcome it?

The most challenging thing I experienced during my internship was learning the specific software Live Oak Bank used daily. However, during my time in the COB, we worked with and learned to operate several different software programs that Live Oak used. Operating and learning in these programs allowed me to put myself in a mindset to overcome the challenge of learning financial software.

How have you applied what you learned in your classwork to this position?

My classwork in finance, accounting, and my entire management concentration played a part in making the learning gap easier in my internship. You will use what you learn during your time at ECU.

What has this internship taught you about responsibility?

Having the responsibility to safely and accurately review hundreds of clients’ financial data was huge. The banking industry has very sensitive data, so ensuring you are following all the proper safety procedures is a big responsibility.

Why would you recommend a business student take advantage of the Cunanan Center for Professional Success resources?

No matter how good you think you are with interviews or how strong your resume may appear, there is always room for improvement. Take advantage of any resource, especially the Cunanan Center’s resume and practice interview programs. Also, make sure you are on ‘Handshake.’ The Cunanan Center has it on its website. Not only is it another way to ‘market yourself,’ it is another way to get as much exposure as possible to the job market.
