Accounting Career Opportunities
Accounting is not just an occupation, but a profession.
A career in accounting will afford you the opportunity to become a member of one of the most highly-respected professions in the world. The skill set that you will develop with an accounting degree will enable you to begin a career from within many different types of jobs. As a member of the profession, you will be in high demand. Employers routinely recruit ECU students for jobs across the region, state and country.
Public Accounting
Those pursuing a career in public accounting will typically pursue certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). A CPA is a trusted advisor that offers advice on the financial health of organizations through audits and other attest work and also offers organizations tax, financial reporting and advisory services to help with strategic decision-making. Typical areas to specialize in are:

- Consulting
Governmental Accounting
Governments require tight control over the resources that have been entrusted to them. Careers in this area range from third party oversight to managing the resources of the governmental organization. Some opportunities are with (or as) the:
- State Auditor
- Internal Revenue Service
- City Manager
- School System Controller
Management Accounting
Management accountants are responsible for managing risks, planning, strategizing, and decision making. Typical jobs are:

Meet the Firms Event
Each year the Department of Accounting hosts an event where employers visit campus to meet students and discuss full-time jobs and internships. For the fall 2022 semester we will have 30 organizations participate in this event. These organizations are available to discuss full-time job opportunities, internships and just help you explore the accounting profession.
