John is an accounting professor and has been at ECU since 1999. He was formerly chair of the accounting department and associate dean of the College of Business. Johns has a BS in Commerce from the University of Virginia, a Master of Accountancy from the University of Alabama, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of South Carolina. Before entering academics, he worked in banking for a predecessor of Bank of America and in public accounting for Ernst & Young, both in Norfolk, Virginia. Prior to coming to ECU, he taught at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida for three years. John’s research and teaching interests are primarily in auditing, fraud examination, and managerial/cost accounting.

His wife, Michele, is also on the accounting faculty at ECU. He has a son who is a CPA and audit senior with KPMG, one of the Big 4 accounting firms, in Denver. He also has a daughter who is an Intelligence Officer in the US Air Force, and she is stationed in the UK. For fun, John enjoys time with his family, riding his Peloton bike, being outside (kayaking, hiking, hunting and fishing), and playing Texas Hold ‘Em poker.
