Graduate Certificate in Hospitality Management

The hospitality management certificate will prepare students for a successful professional career through a well-rounded business education and specialized course work in food service, lodging, management, and conventions/special events.  Students can also pursue the graduate certificate only. Career opportunities are available in a wide range of operations, from small business to large corporations.  Positions include: hotel managers, restaurant or club managers, food and beverage managers, institutional sales personnel, and marketing directors.

Certificate Requirements

Students are required to take HMGT 6310, 6400, 6410, and 6420.

  • HMGT 6310 – Strategic Management of Conventions and Special Events
  • HMGT 6400 – Critical Analysis of Food Service and Beverage Management Systems
  • HMGT 6410 – Strategic Management of Lodging Operations
  • HMGT 6420 – Current Issues and Strategies in Hospitality Management

Due to course rotations, this program takes a minimum of 2 semesters to complete.

  • Fall – HMGT 6400, 6410
  • Spring – HMGT 6310, 6420

Admissions Information

Acceptance into this certificate program is dependent upon, but not limited to, one of the following:

  • a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.7, OR
  • 5 years of progressive professional experience and an undergraduate degree, OR
  • a graduate degree, OR
  • admission to/enrollment in a graduate degree program at East Carolina University, OR
  • admission to/enrollment in the ECU MBA program – certificate can replace electives component of degree by completing this form

Special note: Students who successfully complete this College of Business graduate certificate can waive the entrance exam admissions requirement for the MBA and MS-STH programs. Certificate-only students cannot take MBA or MS-STH classes that are not part of their certificate program until the semester in which they are fully admitted to the degree program.
